I got interested in clocks in 1. I started collecting watches fairly seriously in the early . I ran out of room for clocks. Pocket watches are a little bit more manageable, and in some ways more interesting, too. I collect precision clocks, clocks that are very accurate timekeepers, and marine chronometers; things like that. I specialize in a few different specific types of pocket watches, but my principal interest is in the Waltham Watch Company, and even more specifically in the American Watch Co. It had many name changes over the years and a couple of small reorganizations and eventually became the Waltham Watch Company in the early 1. The very best, most expensive Waltham watches for all of that roughly 5. American Watch Co. Collectors Weekly: Why did they change the name to Waltham? Mc. Intyre: There were lots of reasons. The town of Waltham had become well known, and the name appeared on all of their watches as the location anyway. They got into a trademark dispute with another company that started building watches in Waltham, so they wanted to protect that name, and I think that is the main reason. Also, American Watch Co. Find out info, specs, and value for your antique pocket watch. We offer serial number lookups for manufacturers such as Elgin, Illinois, Waltham, and Hamilton. That was the second company that started up. It’s almost like the American League and the National League in baseball. They were always the two biggest. At that time there was nobody manufacturing pocket watches like we manufacture automobiles and appliances and various other things today. That whole manufacturing process was invented by Waltham for precision goods. It was just beginning to be developed. Everything was made by hand before that. An individual would sit down and work on pieces of metal until they had built all the pieces for a watch. Then they would assemble it and have the watch run. But having an assembly line with lots of people working on it and putting things together in large volumes had never been done before. The first experiments were at the Springfield Armory for the Civil War. The Springfield Armory built lots of rifles. Those techniques were adopted and adapted by the people at Waltham to build pocket watches. Collectors Weekly: Before that, were people making pocket watches in America at all? Mc. Intyre: There were some brothers in Connecticut called the Pitkins who made some watches before that, and there was a family near Worcester, Mass. Luther Goddard and Benjamin Goddard and Parley Goddard made watches, but they were handmade watches. The Pitkin watches used some machinery and were a first stab at doing it, but they didn’t do it all that well, so it didn’t really take off, and one of them went insane trying and killed himself. Collectors Weekly: Once Waltham introduced precision manufacturing, how did the quality of the watches change? Mc. Intyre: The point of manufacturing them was that if you made the same part over and over again, you could make it better than if you had to make each one from scratch each time. They had special machinery that would make gears and special machinery that would make shafts and plates and little springs and all the various pieces of the watch, the screws and so forth, but it took a long time to develop all those machines. The very first pocket watches they made with machinery were about as good as the regular run- of- the- mill watches that were being made in Europe, but they weren’t nearly as good as the very best European watchmakers could make them. They were better than any that were being made in this country because we just didn’t have the tradition of the crafts here, but the English and Swiss and French made very fine watches in the early 1. At first they were figuring out the machines. They were figuring out how heavy they had to make them to be able to cut the same shape reliably every time and all sorts of things about how to build production machinery that they didn’t really know. If you’re going to make parts automatically and have clamping jaws opening and closing and picking things up and moving them around by machinery, then you need to have a great, strong, and stable base for that machine. I think they were surprised at how heavy they had to make the machinery and it took them a few years to work all that out, but by the early 1. Waltham were winning all of the prizes around the world for the best watches. It only took them about 2. The Mc. Intyre Watch Co. From the Jon Hanson collection. They were still making them by hand in Europe until then, and then a fellow from Switzerland came over to our centennial exposition in 1. Waltham watches being made by machinery. He went back to Switzerland and tried to persuade the Swiss to do that. It took quite a few years to persuade them, but a couple of Americans went over there and set up factories, and then the Swiss reports said that the machinery was the way to go. The Swiss developed a very similar style of making watches by machine, but not with large factories like the Americans had. So the Swiss never did get to making millions of watches a year, at least in the 1. American watch companies were making more than a million watches a year. The Swiss are known for their craftsmanship, however. They had an edge in terms of assembling the watches and adjusting them and that sort of thing. Once they got to using the machinery, they could produce some very wonderful things. They caught up with the Americans in the early 2. That, plus a couple of wars where the Swiss didn’t fight and we did, essentially finished off the American watch industry. The last American watch factory folded up in the 1. Recently a fellow started making watches in America, complete watches but on a very small scale, but that only started a couple of years ago. They’re mostly wristwatches because there’s not a big market for pocket watches. Nobody wears vests anymore. There are some craftsmen, mostly in England and Switzerland, who occasionally make a very special pocket watch, and Patek Philippe, which is one of the top wristwatch companies, also occasionally makes pocket watches. The Patek Philippe caliber 8. It could tell you what day Easter was going to fall on 5. Collectors Weekly: Who were some of the major pocket watch manufacturers? Mc. Intyre: In Switzerland, Geneva is where the headquarters are, but the Le Locle is where the major part of production is. It’s called the Valle de Joux, which is the valley of joy, loosely translated, which is north and east of Geneva. It’s been there for 2. The English, French, and Swiss didn’t build factories, so there were lots more of them because the individual makers might be producing maybe a hundred watches a year, at the very most maybe 3. The American factories had hundreds and hundreds of employees in very large factories.“The last American watch factory folded in the 1. So Waltham was the first, as I said, then Elgin was formed, and then the Illinois Watch Company, and then there were Hampden and Hamilton. So at the peak, I think there were 2. American watch companies. As things tapered off in the 2. Depression and so forth, Hamilton, Elgin, and Waltham were the last three survivors, and Hamilton was the final survivor of all of those. The Elgin company still makes fancy alloys for some industrial applications, so there’s a little piece of Elgin that’s still alive. The Hamilton people bought one of the Swiss companies and then merged back into a Swiss company. This Game Tests Your Ability to Spot Fake News. Workplace Wellness Programs Statistics Probability Examples![]() Perspectives on Disability Disclosure: The Importance of Employer Practices and Workplace Climate. In this section, we present descriptive statistics about the characteristics of survey respondents. We then present response frequencies from a series of items that offer insights into the barriers and facilitators of disclosure. Results are displayed for respondents with disabilities overall and by the subgroup characteristics of apparentness of disability, whether or not they disclosed in their current or most recent position, and if they were a disability service provider. We then discuss the results of the qualitative analysis of an open- ended item on addressing future disclosure decisions, providing further insight into the disclosure experiences of individuals with disabilities. Characteristics of Respondents. The survey asked individuals to self- identify whether or not they had a disability; the majority of respondents identified as a person with a disability (5. In the survey instructions, a “person with a disability” was defined broadly to include (but not be limited to) individuals with a physical or cognitive disability, mental health condition, chronic health condition, vision or hearing impairment, or workplace injury or illness. We felt that these broader categories reflected those disabilities covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2. ADAAA). We did not use the ADA definition of disability,2 which we felt might be difficult for respondents to interpret. In a separate question we asked individuals to identify specific conditions, using a list that was adapted from the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). Respondents with disabilities reported a variety of health conditions; the three most common were mental/emotional health conditions (5. The large number of respondents having a mental/emotional health condition was expected, given the survey promotion through SAMHSA. Analyses in this paper focus on individuals who self- identified as a person with a disability, and Table 2 presents characteristics of these respondents. Many of the respondents were disability service providers (2. Just over a third of respondents reported that their disability was very apparent to others, while nearly 4. More than four out of five identified their race as “white.” Just over two- thirds of respondents with a disability were employed. Rating the Importance of Various Barriers and Facilitators to the Disclosure Decision. The first section of the survey asked respondents to rate the importance of various factors in the decision to disclose (or not) on a scale from 1—not at all important to 5—very important. The question asked: “Please indicate how important each factor would be to you, or to an employee/applicant with a disability, when deciding to . The facilitating factors focused on areas where an employer could make a change to improve the climate or culture for people with disabilities. In presenting the results of these ratings, we chose to dichotomize the ratings of importance and present the percent who indicated the factor was “very important.”Barriers to Self- Identification. Table 3 presents factors which may pose a barrier to disclosure in order from highest to lowest percentage of respondents who indicated the factor as “very important.” All barriers from the survey are included in the table. Among factors that may influence the decision to conceal a disability, the most highly rated responses among people with a disability were risk of being fired/not hired (7. This was followed by concern that the employer may focus on disability (6. Overall fewer than one in three respondents rated a desire for privacy as a very important factor in the decision not to disclose; and fewer than half rated disability does not have an impact on the ability to perform the job as a very important factor in the decision not to disclose. Table 3. Percent who rated each inhibiting factor as “very important”: Overall and by subgroup. In order to further understand the relationship between respondent characteristics and ratings of factor importance, we conducted analyses grouping respondents based on the following factors: (1) how apparent their disability is; (2) whether they disclosed in their most recent position (only asked of individuals who have worked); and (3) whether they are employed as a disability service provider. Those with a less apparent disability were more likely to rate the above factors as very important, as compared with those with a very apparent disability. Significant differences were found for: concern about being fired or not being hired (7. Those who did not disclose in their most recent position rated many of the above factors as more important than did respondents who had disclosed. In particular, concerns about being treated differently (6. They were also far more likely to rate as very important the desire to keep the disability private (4. Finally, we compared those employed as a disability service provider to others; as we believe that those in the disability sector may have a different perspective on disability disclosure, as disability is a focus in their workplaces. As expected, disability service providers had lower ratings on some of the factors, with significantly lower ratings on concerns about: employer focusing more on the disability (5. A few other factors were added by respondents in the open- ended opportunity to rate additional factors; most were concerns that fit into the factors listed in Table 3. Many respondents highlighted concern over being treated differently, particularly emphasizing a concern about co- worker attitudes and fear of bullying by other employees – e. Once the disability becomes known the workplace becomes . Others had concerns that employers might not be knowledgeable of the laws protecting people with disability from workplace discrimination. Overcoming Barriers to Self- Identification. We also examined a set of workplace factors that may encourage disclosure, with a focus on areas that employers may target to improve inclusiveness of their organization. In addition to these organizational factors, we included the need for accommodation, an individual factor that is often the primary reason for disclosure. Table 4 presents these all facilitating factors ordered from highest to lowest percentage of respondents who indicated the factor as “very important” in their decision to disclose. Table 4. Percent who rated each facilitating factor as “very important”: Overall and by subgroup. For people with a disability the most important factors were need for an accommodation (6. However the context of the workplace was also important. Individuals with disabilities rated highly knowing employer has made concerted efforts to create disability/friendly workplace (5. Many thought it was very important to know that disclosure would lead to new opportunities for promotion or training (4. Just over a quarter felt it was very important that the employer had a disability- focused employee resource group (ERG) (2. There were differences across subgroups with relation to which factors were rated as “very important” to encouraging disclosure. Ode to the Graphing Calculator. The ridiculously expensive Texas Instruments graphing calculator is slowly but surely getting phased out. The times they are a- changin’ for the better, but I’m feeling nostalgic. I have some wonderful memories associated with my TIs. You probably have an expensive Texas Instruments graphing calculator packed away somewhere. In fact, I still have two. For years, TI graphing calculators have been on the school supply list of almost every student that even sets foot in an upper- level math class.
![]() Mind Of A Serial Killer Video Questions Template For PowerpointThey are the only calculators allowed on major standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, AP, and IB exams. When I was in school, everybody had one. And if you haven’t poked your head into a high school for a while, that’s still the case—and they haven’t gotten any cheaper. My first graphing calculator, a TI- 8. Plus, which was the standard at the time, cost my parents $1. They’re still just as expensive, even though your watch probably has more computing power now. They can cost upwards of $2. No longer will less fortunate families be forced to shell out major moola for a plastic brick that spends most of its time taking up space in students’ backpacks. But recently, several school districts around the country dealt a worthy blow to the stranglehold Texas Instruments has long held on students and their families’ wallets. The calculator app Desmos, which you can install on your i. Artisteer - web design generator for Joomla templates, Wordpress themes, Drupal themes, Blogger templates and DNN skins. Texas Instruments president of education technology Peter Balyta, but its days appear numbered. This is a welcome thing for just about everyone. If this trend continues, no longer will Texas Instruments have a calculator monopoly, and no longer will less- fortunate families be forced to shell out major moola for a plastic brick that spends most of its time taking up space in students’ backpacks. Math will hopefully be more accessible to all. It’s truly for the better. Partly because I’m getting older and losing touch with the youth of today, but also partly because I loved my calculators and future kids won’t get the same experience I did. During my math journey from algebra to high- level college calculus, my graphing calculators became extensions of my brain. But that’s not where my love for the machines came from. No, it was the games and other “apps” that sealed my bond with my TIs. You see, in high school, my friends and I ran an underground ring of calculator game sharing. The process was simple. With a special cable you could install games you found within the darkest depths of the internet onto your device. Then, with the same cable, you could transfer the game data over to a different calculator. Oh, the hours I spent playing Snake, trying to beat my friends’ high scores. How I longed to beat Phoenix, a bullet- hell shooter that I still can’t believe was written in TI- Basic. From text- based adventures to a near- perfectly- recreated version of Bubble Bobble, my TI was my favorite gaming device. Anybody could play them in class and the teachers would be none the wiser. Now, I know kids can play games on their phones easily enough, but smartphones are the bane of teachers’ existence right now, and having those out in the open raise a lot more suspicions than an innocent calculator. My math teachers had no idea that the only numbers I was concerned with were my high scores. Some games, like ancient stories retold by orators through the years, were merely passed down from generation to generation. Nobody knew where most of the games originated, but everybody had them. Every week it seemed like there was a new game to acquire, and kids with the hottest collections of TI games—like me—had people lining up in the hallway. Like a shady back alley deal, kids would approach me at lunch and ask if I had anything new. No, today I’m pouring one out for my TIs. Your reign will soon be over, my friends, but I’ll never forget you. Exploring brain, body, mind, spirit, intuition, leadership, research, psychotherapy and more!
